Sony announced the PS5 today. It’s another locked-down computer with a proprietary operating system that you can’t hack on without permission from the manufacturer.
Fuck that shit. I can’t believe I kept buying Sony consoles for as long as I did.
Hell, fuck proprietary video games in general. Even Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei aren’t that good.
Any video game that you can’t build from source code on your own computer might not really be worth playing.
PS: if the basic build process is harder than…
./configure
make
sudo make install
…then the developer is an asshole.
And, yes, I get that having to open a terminal and compile a game from source might be too much for the average gamer. Tough shit. Gamers need to step the fuck up and learn to actually use their computers instead of letting themselves be used by them.
Update for 12 June 2020
Shufei took the time to reply to this rant.
Apparently it’s a subject near to her heart as well.
I agree with her regarding the need for useful examples in manual pages, and that man pages in general need more love. I just don’t want to do it myself; between my day job, being a good husband, and my existing projects I’m already spread thin.
Then again, giving up proprietary video games would free up at least an hour a day. :)
Incidentally, manual pages is just one of the many things OpenBSD does right. If you don’t need wifi or have a machine all Intel components you should give it a shot.
